LAW DAY 2019
“Free Speech and a Free Press: Blessings of a Free Society”
In the United States and in various countries around the world, freedom of speech and freedom of the press are important foundations for a free society. A free society without these individual liberties is hard to imagine, yet historical and current debates surrounding them continually challenge us to consider their boundaries, especially with how technology has reshaped how one exercises their voice in a democracy.
*Students in the 12th grade attending public or private school in Brazoria County and/or residing in Brazoria County are invited to take part in the essay contest where at least one scholarship worth at least $1,000 will be awarded.
*The essay must be written in response to the following prompt: In 750 words or less, explain the importance of how free speech and a free press further encourage our free society, the challenges and benefits technology plays in free speech and a free press, and the civic responsibility required to ensure this constitutional democracy of America endures.
*All expenses involved in preparing and submitting an entry are the entrant’s responsibility.
*Entrants must allow the Brazoria County Bar Association and/or the State Bar of Texas to reproduce entries in any medium without restriction.
*The essay must: accompany the entry form, be between 400 and 750 words, be typewritten and be double-spaced.
